Why is my skin becoming less firm and plump?

We all want our skin to stay firm and supple, and this is mainly thanks to collagen and elastin, two proteins naturally present in our bodies. However, as we age, the production of these proteins tends to decrease. Let us explain!

Understanding your skin and its needs

Young skin vs adult skin 1 Why is my skin becoming less firm and bouncy?

What is collagen?

Collagen is a structural protein naturally present in our bodies as fibers in the deeper layers of our skin. It provides support and helps the skin resist stretching. It is thanks to collagen that water is better absorbed, and the skin is firmer and more resilient.

What is elastin?

Elastin is another fibrous protein that provides elasticity to the skin, as well as to arteries and lungs. Like an elastic band, elastin allows the skin to stretch and return to its original size. It is therefore essential for firm, supple skin.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is also a natural component of the dermis. It acts like a sponge, capturing and retaining water, and supports collagen and elastin. By ensuring proper hydration, the skin becomes denser and firmer.

What factors contribute to the decrease in these proteins?

From the age of 30, the levels of hyaluronic acid and collagen gradually decrease. As a result, the skin loses its firmness, which breaks down or weakens the elastin. Consequently, the skin becomes less firm and loses its elasticity over time. This can be explained by several factors: a vitamin C deficiency, a decrease in estrogen in women (exacerbated by menopause), a poor diet, smoking, stress, and sun exposure (UV rays).
